Trinity in Washington, a comprehensive university in the nation’s capital, seeks an outstanding academic leader as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Trinity’s historic undergraduate women’s college. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur founded Trinity in 1897 and their influence continues to inform Trinity’s primary mission to women and work for social justice in the Catholic tradition. Leading a diverse faculty and staff of teaching scholars representing over 15 major programs and teaching a dynamic General Education curriculum complementing those majors, the Dean has direct responsibility for management oversight of the affairs of the College including budgeting, faculty personnel management, assessment and accreditation, strategic planning and implementation of new initiatives. The new Dean will work closely with colleagues throughout the University to achieve the strategic goals central to the College’s and Trinity’s success.
A $10 million gift, the largest in Trinity’s history, has just accelerated the plans for building Trinity’s new Academic Center, which will feature state of the art classrooms and laboratories dedicated to Trinity’s students’ success across the University. The College of Arts and Sciences is Trinity’s historic undergraduate women’s college with more than 1,000 students. The School of Professional Studies enrolls more than 900 working professionals in undergraduate and graduate programs. The School of Education delivers graduate degrees for teachers, administrators and counselors, and the School of Nursing and Health Professions enrolls more than 250 students in nursing and occupational therapy. The collegiate deans work closely together to promote Trinity’s initiatives, and the deans also collaborate with Trinity’s executive team, reporting to the Provost and working directly with the President and serving as a key member of the Senior Executive Staff.
Candidates should have at least ten years of increasingly responsible administrative and executive experience in a collegiate setting, including teaching experience in a setting similar to the College’s. The candidate must have an earned doctorate and will have had direct experience as a senior or executive administrator in a liberal arts college working directly with underserved populations and with special attention to programs focusing on developing women’s success. S/he should be inclusive, collaborative, and collegial, with a keen sense of managing multiple, diverse initiatives while leading a dedicated and diverse team of faculty and staff to achieve goals. A team player with a deep understanding of higher education in the 21st century as well as the ability to translate vision into action, the successful candidate will bring a unique ability to express the value of liberal learning in the current environment with particular attention to faculty development promoting such learning. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in writing and oral communication as well as a strong track record in both teaching as well as successful program development and innovation; a demonstrated ability to practice the scholarship of integration while promoting new and innovative ways of teaching and learning are important characteristics for the College’s leader.
