Trinity Washington University has an immediate opening for a Sergeant (Shift Supervisor) for the Department of Public Safety within Trinity.
POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety, this position manages shift operations, manages a designated geographical patrol area, or supervises a specialized unit during event(s). In the absence of the Shift Commander, this individual is the immediate shift supervisor for public safety personnel, including campus police officers, contracted security officers and student staff. This position plans, directs, coordinates, staffs, and organizes operational resources to accomplish department goals and objectives. In detecting and deterring crime, this position is responsible for the knowledge, application and enforcement of University, state, local and federal policies, procedures, rules, regulations, laws and ordinances for the purpose of maintaining order; and conducts various administrative and operational duties related to same. Designated as an “essential employee,” this position may require irregular work assignments, occasional callbacks, as needed, or as assigned, including rotating shifts, and swing shifts. The sergeant works independently with limited supervision forth (40) hours per week minimum. Individual may be required to remain on duty beyond normal shift and/or be available on a 24-hour basis to report for duty without advance notice due to emergencies or staffing shortages.
The sergeant is responsible for effective supervision of all subordinate members of the Department, particularly in the areas of patrol operations, initial investigations, case follow up, field training and evaluation and report writing. Manages daily operations, insuring consistent application and enforcement of departmental policies and procedures, including (but not limited to): staffing & deployment; incident and criminal reports; communication logs; activity logs; supervisory reports; daily media logs; and various other administrative paperwork such as schedules, status reports, operation plans (i.e.: special events) and estimated budgets related to same.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent; sufficient combination of training and experience in police supervision, preferably in a higher education environment
- Knowledge of the principles of leadership, management, supervision, instruction, training and performance management
- Must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 21 years of age and possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Must demonstrate excellent customer service based skills; and be highly effective in both oral and written communications
SPECIAL LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS & CERTIFICATIONS:
Must have and maintain Special Police Officer (SPO) status (license) through the District of Columbia, to include meeting and maintaining the prescribed requirements and qualifications associated with SPO status as defined by the MPD Security Officer’s Management Branch (SOMB) Policy Manual.
