Trinity in Washington, a comprehensive university in the nation’s capital, seeks candidates to establish its first in-house Office of General Counsel. A longstanding relationship with an outside law firm is concluding upon the retirement of the partner who has represented Trinity for nearly 25 years, and Trinity has chosen to create this in-house position for general legal affairs.
The general counsel will report directly to the president and will provide legal advice on a broad range of matters including, but not limited to:
General Business matters: works closely with the CFO and controller, director of Human Resources and other senior managers, provost and deans to review contracts, assist in business negotiations, update personnel handbooks, review hiring practices and to ensure the adequacy of and adherence to all institutional policies and procedures
Regulatory compliance: work with the senior management team, faculty and administrators to ensure institutional compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.
Risk management: with the president and board, as well as in cooperation with Trinity’s insurance provider United Educators, ensure that Trinity’s policies, processes and practices for risk management provide adequate protection against claims and losses; work with the HR director and provost to provide training programs for staff and faculty on risk management issues.
Governance: provide legal counsel to Trinity’s Board of Trustees and to the president on internal governance matters including academic and student governance issues.
Representation: represent Trinity as necessary in responding to complaints, court matters, mediation, arbitration and litigation; as may be necessary from time to time, work with special counsel whom Trinity may retain for particular kinds of legal work, e.g., construction matters.
Qualifications: candidates must be licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, which includes having at least a J.D. degree from an accredited law school. Significant experience in higher education law, especially in a general counsel’s office or equivalent position, will be a great advantage. Candidates must write and speak well and clearly. Candidates must also demonstrate the senior leadership qualities necessary to work with Trinity’s president, board, senior management and faculty effectively.
