Required Immunizations and Tuberculosis Screening Policy

Required Immunizations

ALL students under age 26 years at time of school registration are required by D.C. Law 3-20 to provide documentation of vaccination or immunity (lab titers are acceptable) from Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Polio, Varicella, and Hepatitis B, All students, regardless of age, are screened for Tuberculosis (TB) by a risk assessment questionnaire and TB test as indicated, consistent with guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and the American College Health Association.

Required Immunizations for ALL students under age 26

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria or Tdap: one vaccination within the last 10 years.
  • Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR): two vaccinations after 12 months of age at least 1 month apart (OR provide laboratory proof of immunity)
  • Polio: Three vaccinations (OR provide laboratory proof of immunity)
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox): two vaccinations given a minimum of 30 days apart, regardless of the age, (OR document history of Varicella disease/provide laboratory proof of immunity)
  • Hepatitis B: three vaccinations with dose two given 30 days after dose one, dose three given four months after dose two, or according to the accelerated schedule, (OR provide laboratory proof of immunity)

Health Requirements for ALL Nursing/OT students regardless of age

  • Vaccination series or Immunity documented against Tdap, MMR, Polio, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Annual Flu shot – need to include Lot # and flu season
  • Tuberculosis screening test within the past 12 months
  • Annual physical examination signed by provider

Required Immunization for students living on campus AND student-athletes

  • Meningococcal Vaccine- 2 doses (1st dose after 16th birthday)

Recommended Immunizations for all students

  • Hepatitis A series
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) series

Request for Medical or Religious Exemption

Religious exemption is allowed if the responsible person objects in good faith and in writing that the immunization violates her religious or ethical beliefs. Medical exemption is allowed if a physician or health care provider deems an immunization medically inadvisable. Students who wish to be exempt due to religious or medical reasons must submit a letter from a medical provider or religious clergy which states the need for exemption. DC Law mandates that in order to register for classes, your immunization record must be on record and complete.
