Mallory Shephard ’18, Psychology Major

How did you choose Trinity Washington University?

During the time when I was deciding which University to go to, I had friends that were already at Trinity. I heard good things about Trinity and I made the decision to visit the campus. Then, I liked that it was a small school due to the fact that I wanted to be in a peaceful environment. Also, by doing some of my own research I noticed that many important women have graduated from Trinity. Lastly, I chose to come here since they were willing to give me the most in scholarships and financial aid.

How will you use your education to become a dynamic leader in your community?
As a Psychology major, I plan on using my education with the children in my community.  Personally, I feel that this community needs more specialist in schools to assist children who need unique services in order to be successful in school. I believe that my experience with special needs children in school environments and dedication to working within the Latino community would aide in my becoming a dynamic leader in my community. Children are the future so let’s make sure they are well prepared to conquer!
If you could issue a statement to young girls that could bebroadcast for the whole world to see, what would you say to them?

Success is not going to happen over night. It takes time to discover who you are, and how you plan to reach your goals. Struggles will come your way, yet you have to embrace those struggles to be the best you can be.
What inspires you?

This is a simple but hard question. Many things inspire me. First, my mom inspires me to finish school being that she had me at a young age and was not able to finish college. I have seen how much she has sacrificed just so that me and my sister could have a roof over our heads. Fortunately, after twenty-three years she has returned to school. We push each other to keep going so that soon we can feel that success that we have always wanted. Second, people that are already successful inspire me. I enjoy the guest speakers that come to Trinity and talk to us women about thier journey. These speakers make me realize that anyone can make it far, but it all comes down to your ambition and dedication. Third, the power of independence inspires me. In this society so many women are getting their degrees so that they do not have to depend on a man. Times have changed and I strongly believe in being able to provide for myself. My grandpa would always say, “A degree will never leave you, but a man will”. These exact words have motivated me to want to keep going to school; which, has opened many doors for me. Furthermore, I am inspired to inspire the youth in finding their passion and carreer paths.
