Master of Arts in Teaching
Trinity’s M.A.T. program is designed to prepare you to achieve your teaching credential, enabling you to become a classroom teacher. Credentialed teachers are in high demand in the Washington metro area and across the country. With a Trinity M.A.T. degree you will be prepared to teach in diverse classroom settings and be ready to start your career in education.
Small class sizes and one-on-one faculty-student relationships make Trinity’s M.A.T. program unique. Convenient, seminar-style classes are offered during evenings, and the program can be completed with either full- or part-time study. Because Trinity’s program emphasizes the value of student teaching, you will complete at least one semester of full-time study during the final hands-on internship experience.
Concentrations
Trinity offers five concentrations within the Master of Art in Teaching degree program, each preparing you for employment in high-demand positions:
- Through coursework and hands-on field-based experience, the Early Childhood Education concentration gives you the skills to work with young children ages 3 through 8. The program is also suitable if you wish to pursue a career in child care or child development services such as Head Start.
- The Elementary Education concentration is ideal if you wish to pursue a career working with younger students in grades 1 through 6. Courses in this program focus on the teaching and assessment of literacy and reading skills, mathematics, and scientific inquiry.
- The Elementary Education concentration is also available as an Intensive one-year program. The intensive M.A.T. is a three-semester full-time version of the regular M.A.T. program but in a different delivery format beginning each May.
- The Secondary Education concentration prepares you to become an English or Social Studies teacher in grades 7 through 12. As a secondary school teacher, you will have the opportunity to encourage students through their teenage years and positively affect their post-high school lives.
- The Special Education concentration helps advance your career by teaching the specific skills and strategies required to teach special education students and classes. Such teachers are in high demand!
- The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) concentration is perfect if you have a flair for language. Did you study another language in college? Build on those skills with this program to acquire the English-teaching skills that are much in-demand in today’s multicultural classrooms!
