Dr. Maguire Speaks
at the Catholic Bishop's Migration Conference
On July 7, 2003, Dr. Bob Maguire addressed the
issue of "Global Dimensions of Trafficking: Source Countries, Destinations
and Flows." in a presentation at the annual National Migration Conference
of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Dr. Maguire's
presentation was part of the workshop, "Human Trafficking: Who, Where,
Why, and How." The workshop, organized by Dr. Maguire, was a featured
part of the conference held this year in Washington DC. Attending the
conference were over 800 bishops, clergy, and lay workers affiliated with
diverse U.S. Catholic organizations involved in migration, refugee and
asylum issues.
Joining Dr. Maguire as workshop panelists were Trinity Adjunct Professors
Lauren Engle of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and
John Picarelli of the Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC)
at American University. Ms. Engle addressed "Who is Trafficked and
Why," while Mr. Picarelli addressed "Victims and Victimizers."
Both Engle and Picarelli teach courses in the International Affairs graduate
program: International Migration: Women's & Children's Issues. Sr.
Mary Ellen Dougherty, Director of the USCCB's anti-trafficking program,
introduced Dr. Maguire, acknowledging him as the author of Stop Trafficking
of People, an introductory resource guide published in April 2003 by the
USCCB and now used nationwide in anti-trafficking training and victim
service programs.
Dr. Maguire's presentation, highlighted by power point slides with maps
that show the global nature of human trafficking as it emerged in the
late twentieth century, illustrates the patterns of this illicit worldwide
movement of humans and explores push/pull factors that fuel that movement.
His presentation at the USCCB Conference follows similar feature presentations
at Prince Georges Community College and the Social Action and Leadership
School for Activists professional training program in Washington, DC.
