Dr. Shvedova Speaks at the International Organization for Migration

Before Dr. Nadezha Shvedova, Trinity's Fulbright Scholar, assumes her academic responsibilities, she introduced herself to the academic and professional community of the greater Washington DC area on August 20th, at the office of the International Organization for Migration where she spoke on "Russia, Post-Cold War Migration and the Plight of Women and Children." Dr. Shvedova focused on the current political and social situation in Russia, providing an overview of the internal displacement of people after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
She focused specifically on the impact these changes on the political map of what was then called the Eastern Bloc had on the position of women within the society. Trinity's Russian scholar reflected on why women became particularly vulnerable towards migration and trafficking.
Dr. Shvedova's presentation generated great interest among professionals in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Among the more than 40 attending the event were representatives from such organizations as the National Democratic Institute, Brookings Institution, CATO Institute, Department of State, CIA, Eurasia Foundation, US Department of Justice, Amnesty International, Vital Voices, as well as students from local universities.
