Christine Palmer is a first year
student at Trinity. She is majoring in International
Affairs and minoring in Language and Cultural Studies. She hopes
to eventually become a translator for the United Nations in New
York City or work for the US government in any way possible as
a translator.
Christine earned her high school regent's
diploma from Miller Place H.S. in Long Island, New York. This
is where her interest in languages began. She began to learn Spanish
as a second language in sixth grade. She also completed the National
Spanish Exam two years later and placed in Honorable Mention.
Also in 8th grade, Christine needed to take her Spanish proficiency
and scored a 98.
By working at several different restaurants
during her summers, she practiced speaking Spanish frequently
with her fellow co-workers. As a result, she also picked up a
few words in Greek, a language she found to be very complex. In
her freshman year of high school, she tutored an eighth grade
student in Spanish who had a lot of difficulty understanding the
language. While serving as a tutor, she also completed her Spanish
regents exam scoring a 99 on it. The following year, in 10th grade,
she volunteered to do community service and work at a soup kitchen
for the homeless where she was able to speak Spanish to some of
the people who participated in the program.
In her junior year, she decided to pick
up a third language and broaden her knowledge of languages. She
chose Italian, which she found to be quite similar to Spanish.
Christine had to skip level I of Italian and go right into level
II because level I is only taught in middle school. This meant
that she had to catch up on all of the basics of Italian on her
own. By the end of her first year in Italian II, Christine had
scored well enough on all of her tests to receive first place
in the National Italian Poetry Contest, a competition that required
her to memorize and recite a poem in Italian. Between her summer
of her junior and senior year, Christine was tutored in Italian
so she wouldn't forget was she had learned and to improve speaking
the language.
Christine now has seven years of Spanish
under her wing and two years of Italian. She is continuing her
study of Spanish and is currently enrolled in a course for advanced
or native speakers. She's excited for new experiences to come
her way and hopes to study abroad in Spain where she'll be able
to learn more and speak Spanish fluently. She feels that by being
an International Affairs major at Trinity, she will
be able to get the best experience here at Trinity due to it's
great faculty teaching an amazing program in International Affairs.
