Enrollment Options

Because the certificate program and its individual courses aim to serve the dual constituencies of those seeking academic credit and those more interested in information for professional development, two enrollment options exist.

For those seeking academic credit, enrollment in the certificate program is open to individuals who have already attained an undergraduate degree and to students in their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies. Undergraduate students may enroll in certificate program courses once they demonstrate to the director of the program that they have completed program prerequisites.

For those more interested in information for professional development, enrollment as non-matriculating students in individual courses is possible. Non-matriculating students pay a reduced tuition rate, but do not receive academic credit. Non-matriculating students are required to have already attained a baccalaureate degree or to have attained the equivalent of their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies. Certificate program courses are offered as evening courses in the college's School of Professional Studies to facilitate the enrollment of working professionals.

Program Prerequisites

Program enrollment requires satisfaction of four fundamental prerequisites:

  1. Beginning proficiency in a language, other than English, that is relevant to applied international migration work;
  2. General knowledge of international migration issues;
  3. Exposure to gender issues within a higher education framework;
  4. Demonstrated ability to write a research paper.

Advanced undergraduate students may meet these prerequisites by attaining a “C” or better in the following courses offered at Trinity College:

  • FREN 101 &102 Elementary French I & II or SPAN 101 &102 Elementary Spanish I & II
  • SOCY 231 International Migration: An Introduction to the Issues
  • HUMR 301 Seminar: Perspectives on Gender or COM 388 Gender and Communications or PSY 241 Women: Developmental and Multicultural Perspectives
  • SSC 107 Social Science Writing

Graduate students may satisfy program prerequisites either through the presentation of certified university transcripts and/or demonstrated professional, on-the-job experience, or by satisfactorily completing these courses.

The language prerequisite may be met both by undergraduate and graduate applicants through a demonstration of beginner’s language competence during an interview with appropriate program personnel prior to admission to the certificate program. Provisional enrollment in the program will be accorded to students who do not meet the language prerequisite provided they concurrently submit a plan of study, approved by the Director of the Certificate Program, to meet the language requirement prior to the completion of their certificate program coursework.
