On May 25th, 2002, Trinity College in Washington, DC hosted a commemoration of the 199th anniversary of the creation of the flag of Haiti. The event was organized by the Societe Pour La Modernization Regionale De L'Arcahaie (SOMORA), in conjunction with the Trinity College Haiti Program. It began at 6:00 sharp in the O'Connor Auditorium in Trinity's Main Hall located at 125 Michigan Ave. N.E. Ample on-campus parking is available.

The commemoration featured a panel with several presentations related to Haitian history and the Haitian flag. Dr. Paultre P. Desrosiers of the Washington, D.C.-based Toussaint Louverture Historical Society discussed The Great Debate : The History behind the Creation and Evolution of the Haitian Flag. Dr. Bob Maguire, Director of the Trinity College Haiti Program discussed the restoration of the red and blue flag in 1986, illustrating his presentation with a slide show. And Dr. Marc Christophe , of The University of The District of Columbia spoke on "Explaining and Understanding the Words of "La Dessalinienne"

The program also featured a short, animated video on the Haitian Revolution and the creation of the flag; drumming and a dance performance; and a light refreshments featuring a sampling of Haitian specialties.
