FacultyRosemarie Bosler, SND, Associate Professor Visiting FacultyRita Mulholland, Assistant Professor DescriptionThe Master of Education (MEd) is a literacy-based program in curriculum and instruction that provides advanced study for currently certified classroom teachers with prior preparation in education who seek to enhance their teaching skills or for individuals with experience in educational settings other than schools such as community literacy programs, corporate training programs, and museum outreach programs. The MEd is a 36-credit hour program consisting of a core set of advanced professional education courses, a specialization track for teachers or administrators, and a final capstone project focused on the area of specialization. The program is designed to meet the demand for well-trained educators, with a particular focus on preparing teachers and administrators to lead inner-city school efforts that succeed in enhancing student outcomes, even in adverse circumstances. Literacy acquisition and development is viewed as critical to the continuous improvement of inner-city schools. Students will study issues related to urban education and literacy, critique and design models of instruction, and explore current research in the field. Course work integrates knowledge from a variety of disciplines and professions, such as psychology, political science, sociology, economics, and linguistics. Students are expected to demonstrate an in-depth reflective and practical understanding of effective strategies for curriculum development and instruction in urban environments.
