Education and Technology Committee Meeting Minutes – November 13, 2006

Attending:  Barry-Oliver, Easby, Gapen, Gouleta, Mello, Piland, Williams

The meeting convened at 3:15 p.m. with a primary agenda of reviewing the consolidated notes from the small group sessions at the October 18th academic assembly.

The members of the committee accepted the draft minutes of the October 16, 2006 meeting, as presented.

Gapen could not remain for the entire meeting but told committee members of an automated information literacy test that she had found, which would be forwarded to the committee members for their review.  She also agreed to send the syllabus for the SPS information literacy course to the committee members.  Goulete agreed to obtain and forward the syllabus for the EDU technology course.

The committee then discussed the consolidated notes provided by Barry-Oliver (based on the individual summaries drafted by committee members) from the small group sessions at the October 18th academic assembly.  It was noted that there remains confusion between technology and information literacy and that more clarity is required around the definition of information literacy.

The committee agreed to the following action steps:

·        Look into training on information literacy and the use of equipment/technology during registration of new students

·        Look into what technology support can be provided for faculty to share best practices on information literacy

As such, the committee will invite CEO Ron Redon to the next meeting to discuss the topic of support for faculty sharing.

The committee also agreed that it would like to collect data on information literacy requirements currently being met in existing courses and that the January academic assembly would provide an opportunity to survey the faculty, which should produce a higher response rate than by other means.

Easby agreed to provide to the committee members a link to an IT website used by high school students, which they might find useful in their deliberations.

The next meeting of the committee will be on December 11.

The meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
